Indian classical music or Shastriya Sangeet is a tradition that originated in Vedic ritual chants of Samaveda in which the verses are chanted in different musical Notes-Shrutis.
Indian classical Bansuri is one of the oldest musical instruments of India. Lord Krishna played Bansuri flute while he was accompanied by Gopis and surrounded by the gentle presence of cows. Krishna’s flute is often associated with his love for Radhe and the Gopis and the melodies expressing the emotions of love and longing.
The sound of Krishna’s flute represents the call of the divine, drawing all living beings towards spiritual realisation and enlightenment. It signifies the universal attraction of the divine and the longing of the soul to return to its source.
In our academy we learn Indian classical Bansuri music in the tradition of Maihar-Senia Gharana. The school of Maihar-Senia Gharana comes from Sant Haridas and his disciple Tansen of the 15th century. In our Gharana, importance is given to purity and serenity of the ragas and the belief that Ragas are sung and played for one’s own happiness and self-elevation.
Indian classical music is Gurumukhi Vidya (Education learnt from Guru) which has been and is being transferred from Guru to disciples for centuries. Most recent great exponents of Maihar-Senia Gharana are Acharya Allauddin Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Guruma Annapurna Devi and in Bansuri artistes; Pandit Pannalal Ghosh and Pandit Nityanand Haldipur.
